Gov’t: No political risk to EU funds

Interview

The Prime Minister's Office yesterday rejected the idea that political risks could delay acceptance of Hungary's EU-funded operative programmes in Brussels, according to Hungarian news agency MTI.

"There are no political questions on the agenda of talks on the operative programs; these talks are conducted on a professional basis", MTI quoted the Prime Minister's Office as saying.

The planned tax on internet services was criticised by a European Commissioner yesterday as being bad for Hungary.

On Friday, the speaker of the house of Hungary's parliament, László Kövér, said that if the future of the EU is Brussels "dictating how to behave", Hungary should "think over how to back out of it slowly and cautiously".

In early October, the U.S. government banned six unnamed Hungarian government employees and people affiliated with the government from entry into the U.S. on suspicions of corruption.

The Prime Minister's office said these issues do not concern the funds, according to MTI. The office added that the government would send the documents of the operative programs to Brussels later than planned – around the middle November rather than the end of October. Nonetheless, the government expects that the European Commission will still be able to accept the programs this year; therefore, tendering can begin in the first half of 2015.
