Paks project could have foreign managers and partners
The government hopes to reduce operation costs of the Paks 1 power plant by revising existing contracts. Operation of the nuclear power plant must be transparent and the government intends to achieve this by employing international experts from relevant fields, vs.hu reported yesterday citing Lázár János’ speech in today’s parliamentary session.
Responding to criticism by MSZP’s Tóth Bertalan with regards to the secrecy surrounding the contract between Hungary and Russia for the expansion of Hungary’s only nuclear power plant, Lázár said that the existing block would be put under international surveillance, vs.hu added.
The Paks 2 project will also be implemented with the participation of foreign partners and experts, sources told to the news portal, but the government has yet to confirm this information. The French Areava and the Finnish Fortum energy firms are said to be among the potential partners.
Diplomatic sources cited by vs.hu confirmed that the participation of western companies in the Paks would guarantee a certain level of transparency to the much-criticized project.
Fidesz politicians also told vs.hu that the Paks 2 project could very well be cancelled, due to potential financing difficulties caused by the sudden weakening of the Russian economy.
