Németh holds talks in Sofia on south-east European gas corridor
The head of parliament's foreign affairs committee, Zsolt Németh, held talks in Sofia on Thursday on developing a south-east European gas corridor using interconnectors in light of a recent decision to abandon the South Stream pipeline.
Bulgaria and Hungary want the European Union to participate and support infrastructure development for transporting gas from Greece through Bulgaria and Romania to Hungary, Németh said after meeting counterpart Gemma Grozdanova and deputy foreign minister Valentin Poryazov.
There was agreement that Bulgaria could not be held responsible for South Stream's cancellation since it had supported implementing the plans in line with European Union conditions, Németh said. They also shared the view that the "Russian-Turkish agreement, which obviously also serves Brussels' interests, should not disadvantage the two countries that are most dependent on Russian gas: Bulgaria and Hungary."
