March sees more registered job seekers

Approximately 462,000 job seekers were registered in Hungary at the end of March, up from 431,500 a year earlier and 430,700 at the end of the previous month, the National Employment Office (NFSZ) said on its website on Friday. The NFSZ said 22.1% of the total had been seeking work for more than one year, down 6.4 percentage points from a year earlier.

The number of employed in Hungary increased by a year-on-year 1.9%, reaching 2,856,000, in February, including the 168,900 full-time fostered workers, Hungary’s Central Statistics Office (KSH) said on April 21. Commerzbank said late in January that Hungaryʼs fostered workers scheme type of job creation is reaching its limits.

Fostered workers are employed by the government and paid less than minimum wage to work at jobs such as street sweepers or Metro ticket takers.
