Lázár: We have removed obstacles from Paks fuel supply deal

History

All obstacles have been removed from the fuel supply agreement necessary for the planned upgrade of the Paks nuclear power plant, cabinet chief János Lázár said after talks with European Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy Miguel Arias Canete in Brussels on Tuesday, according to Hungarian news agency MTI.

EC spokesperson Anna-Kaisa Itkonen confirmed only that negotiations had taken place between Hungarian authorities and Euratom agency on Wednesday, saying that the task is "to reach an agreement which is fully in line with the provisions of the EU and Euratom treaties on the diversification of fuel supply".

"Hungary has accepted the European Commissionʼs comments and will follow the Finnish example on drafting the fuel supply contract," Lázár said. It was agreed that Hungary would guarantee the opportunity for the Russian side to supply fuel for the newly built reactors for ten years, he said, adding that this solution was completely acceptable to Russia.
