KSH: Unemployment drops to 7.6%

The April unemployment rate in Hungary was 7.6%, which is 0.5% lower than it was a year ago in April, Hungary’s Central Statistics Office (KSH) said today.

The data also include those employed in public work schemes and those working abroad for less than one year. Fostered workers are employed by the government and paid less than minimum wage to work at jobs such as street sweepers or metro ticket takers.

Under the budget plan for 2016, the allocation for fostered work programs would rise by HUF 70 bln to HUF 340 bln, ensuring the participation of 240,000 Hungarians. The bill would allocate HUF 138 bln in support for companies that hire disadvantaged workers.

Data from KSH suggest that the unemployment rate among 15–74 year-olds was steady at 7.6%, however the number of unemployed women declined by 15,000, down to 154,000, and their unemployment rate by 0.8 percentage points to 7.5%, in year-on-year terms. The employment rate among 15–64 year-old men increased by 1.6 percentage points, while the number of employed women aged 15–64 was 1.891 million, and their employment rate grew by 1.7 percentage points to 57.0%.
