KSH: Retail sales up 6.5% in March

Retail sales in Hungary saw a year-on-year increase of 6.5% in March, with retail sales reaching HUF 724 bln during the month at current prices, in absolute terms, a second reading of data published today by the Central Statistics Office (KSH) reveals. The rise followed February’s year-on-year increase of 6.4%.

Data from KSH suggest that food, drinks and tobacco stores accounted for 49% of all retail sales, while the relevant figures for non-food retail shops and the network of gas stations were one third (34%) and 17% respectively.

In year-on-year terms, the volume of retail sales increased by 5.1%, while the volume of sales increased by 4.0% in specialized and non-specialized food retailing, KSH said. The volume of sales grew by 4.6% in non-specialized food, drinks and tobacco stores accounting for 79% of food retailing and by 1.1% in specialized food, beverage and tobacco stores, KSH added.

The turnover of non-food retailing increased by 5.6%, while sales rose in second hand goods shops (19%), books, computer equipment and other specialized stores (11%), textiles, clothing and footwear shops (8.1%), pharmaceutical, medical goods and cosmetics shops (5.5%), non-specialized stores (3.2%), as well as in furniture and electrical goods stores (0.8%), according to KSH.

The volume of sales in automotive gas stations rose by 8.7%, while sales in motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts and accessories stores – not regarded as retailing by the European Statistical System – decreased by 6.7%, KSH added.
