KSH: Number of births, deaths up in Q1
The number of births in Hungary increased by 3% in the first quarter of this year, while the number of deaths increased by 15%, as compared to data from the same period last year, the Central Statistics Office (KSH) said today in a report.
In the first quarter of 2015, 22,014 babies were born, 703 more than during the same period a year earlier, KSH said. The number of deaths increased to 37,823, roughly 4,828 more than in the first quarter of last year.
In addition to deaths and births, immigration has a big impact on the total population. While there are few recent figures, according to KSH estimates, 350,000 people left Hungary in 2013, and many were seeking work elsewhere in Europe. It is not known how many people entered the country at that time.
Data suggest that the number of deaths rose faster than that of births, resulting in an acceleration of the natural decrease, from 11,684 in Q1 of last year to 15,809 in the first three months of this year.
Earlier Cabinet Chief János Lázár said at his regular weekly press conference on May 14 that in the past 20 months, the number of births had been on the rise while the number of deaths was decreasing, Hungarian online daily origo.hu reported.
