Retail sales in Hungary saw a year-on-year rise of 6.4% in February, according to both calendar year-adjusted and unadjusted data, the Central Statistics Office (KSH) said in a second reading of data today.

KSH revised the figure slightly upwards from 6.2%, as was published in a first reading released on April 8. Calendar year-adjusted retail sales growth slowed from 8.7% in the previous month.

Food, drinks and tobacco stores accounted for 50% of all retail sales, while the relevant figures for non-food retail shops and the network of petrol stations were one third (34%) and 16%, respectively.

In year-on-year terms, the volume of sales increased by 3.3% in specialized and non-specialized food retailing, according to KSH, while the volume of sales grew by 3.8% in non-specialized food, drinks and tobacco stores accounting for 79% of food retailing and by 1.6% in specialized food, beverage and tobacco stores.

The turnover of non-food retailing increased by 8.6%. The volume of sales in automotive fuel stations rose by 11%, but sales in motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts and accessories stores – not regarded as retailing by the European Statistical System – decreased by 1.8%.7.
