Hungary’s farm gate prices down 9.8% in June

Farm gate prices in Hungary fell by 9.8% year-on-year in June, the Central Statistics Office (KSH) reported today.

Crop prices were down by 15.8%, while livestock and animal products prices were up by 1.9%.

Grain prices were down 15.9% in June. Industrial crops declined 15.7%, including a 17.4% drop in the price of oil seeds. Potato prices dipped 45.4%. Prices of fresh vegetables were up 2.0% and fruit prices fell 29.8%.

Live cattle prices rose 1.0%, hog prices were up 6.2% and poultry prices were down 6.2%. Egg prices went up by 0.9% and milk prices increased 8.7%. Farm gate prices of milk and eggs have remained unchanged since January 2014 but the variation is due to a change in the index base, KSH noted.

In H1, farm gate prices fell by 11.8% from a year earlier as prices of crops dipped 18.1% and prices of live animals and animal products were up 1.1%.

Agricultural input prices fell 4.4% from a year earlier as prices for current expenditures were down 5.1% and prices for investments rose 1.2%.

Food prices fell the most, dropping by 14.9% after a 22.7% increase in the same period last year. Artificial fertilizer prices were down 6.9%.

Prices of energy used in the farm sector fell 2.8% on average.

Prices of farm machinery edged up 0.3% while prices of building material rose 2.4%.
