Hungary’s cereal harvest up 6.1%

Hungary’s cereal harvest reached 7.2 million tons in 2014, up 6.1% from the previous year, the Central Statistics Office (KSH) said today, citing preliminary data.

Growth was primarily due to favourable weather, KSH notes.

The wheat harvest was up 3.5% from the previous year, at 5.2. million tons.

The barley harvest rose 20% to 1,279,000 tons. Average yield per hectare climbed 10%.

The oat harvest totalled 137,000 tons, up 4% from the previous year and the crop of triticale, a hybrid of wheat and rye, rose to 488,000 tons, up 6.3% from the previous year. The average yield per hectare rose 5.4% for oat and edged up 1.8% for triticale.
