Hungary CPI up 0.2%, as expected

Figures

The consumer price index in Hungary edged up by 0.2% year-on-year in August, accelerating from a 0.1% increase in July, according to data released by the Central Statistics Office (KSH) today. The change was in line with expectations of analysts released yesterday.

The year-on-year increase in consumer prices followed three consecutive months of declining prices.

Prices still dropped in comparison to July: Month-on-month consumer prices fell by 0.2% in August.

In a year-on-year comparison, household energy prices decreased by 12.0%, which was due to government-mandated utilities price cuts, KSH said. Food prices slipped 0.1%, but alcohol and tobacco prices grew by 6.4% as tobacco became dearer. Consumer durable prices dipped by 0.2% and prices of goods in the category that includes vehicle fuel also fell by 0.2%. Service prices rose 2.7%.

Core inflation, which excludes volatile fuel and food prices, was up by 2.5% year-on-year.
