Hungary allocates HUF 5.5 bln for fight against IS
The Hungarian government will allocate HUF 5.5 bln to fund preparations for Hungaryʼs participation in the international coalition against the Islamic State, Hungarian news agency MTI reported according to a government resolution published in the Monday edition of the official gazette Magyar Közlöny.
The economy minister must provide HUF 5.47 bln in preparation for Hungaryʼs participation in the coalition. Additionally, he must prepare a government proposal by May 31 to make additional resources available if necessary.
Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó told Parliamentʼs foreign affairs committee on March 17 that Hungaryʼs participation in the international coalition against the IS is likely to cost HUF 20 bln in the first year. Talks are under way with the United States about equipment supplies that would represent some HUF 7 bln of the costs, he added.
Defense Minister Csaba Hende told Parliament yesterday that Hungarian soldiers in Iraq would be fulfilling their tasks far from the frontline and they would not be involved in military attacks. A contingent of 150 soldiers who volunteer for the task will be stationed in Erbil until December 31, 2017, he added.
