Hernádi's criminal case to start in Zagreb on February 12
The Zagreb County Court scheduled the first hearing in a case involving corruption charges against Zsolt Hernádi, the chairman-CEO of Hungarian oil and gas company MOL, for February 12, Hungarian news agency MTI reported today.
Hernádi is charged with offering €10 million in bribes to former Croatian President Ivo Sanander for letting Hungarian oil and gas company MOL acquire a majority stake in its peer INA. Hernádi rejected the accusation, while Ivo Sanander has been sentenced to ten years for other reasons.
Croatia’s anti-graft agency (USKOK) reportedly handed in new evidence regarding Hernádi's corruption case on November 24. The Budapest Court of Appeals on December 3 upheld the acquittal of MOL chairman-CEO Zsolt Hernádi on charges of international bribery and other crimes, however it was not expected to affect the course of criminal proceedings under way against him in Croatia, according to reports on December 4.
MOL holdings in INA are just short of a majority stake. The Croatian government is the other big shareholder.
