Gross wages down in December, up for 2013

Average gross wages in Hungary fell 1.1% year-on-year in December as the number of fostered workers, who earn less than the minimum wage, more than doubled, data published by the Central Statistics Office (KSH) on Friday show.

The number of fostered workers rose to 203,000 in December from 87,300 in the same month a year earlier.

Excluding fostered workers, the average gross wage rose 1.6% in December. In absolute terms, the average gross wage was HUF 241,030 in December. Excluding premiums, the average gross wage rose 1.4% to HUF 216,719.

The average net wage edged up 0.4% to HUF 157,875. Calculating with 0.4% consumer price inflation (CPI) in December, real wages were flat.

The average gross wage in the business sector increased 0.5% to HUF 262,026. The average gross wage in the budget sector fell 2.1% to HUF 201,441.

Meanwhile, gross wages were up 3.4% year-on-year for 2013; excluding fostered workers, the increase was 4.2% y.o.y. Full-time employees’ average gross nominal earnings amounted to HUF 230,700; those employed in the business earned an average HUF 242,200.

For 2013, average gross earnings grew by 3.6% in the business sector. In non-profit institutions, average gross earnings rose by 3.1% to HUF 210,200. KSH noted that the highest average salaries were to be had in financial and insurance activities (HUF 471,000); information and communication (HUF 426,500); and utility-services supply (HUF 410,500). Ranking at the bottom of the table were those in the sectors of accommodation and food service activities (HUF 147,000); human health and social work activities (HUF 151,300); and administration/support service activities (HUF 169,200).
