EC could fine Hungary HUF 90 bln in tenders case

The European Commission could fine Hungary HUF 70-90 bln if it finds that Hungary used discriminative restrictions in some of the state’s road construction tenders, Nándor Csepreghy, the Deputy State Secretary of the Prime Minister's Office, announced on public radio today.

According to Csepreghy, the EC could impose fines of between 1% and 20% for a total project stock of HUF 600 bln. The Hungarian government maintains that the tenders were fair, and the investigation is continuing.

Csepreghy suggested that, in case the fine is actually levied, responsibility for paying it may fall upon the state companies inviting the tenders – or the companies who won the tenders. Speculation about a "retroactive tax" on roadbuilders was in the media yesterday, after a web portal published a leaked report.
