Easter boosts egg consumption

Egg consumption is expected to double during the upcoming Easter holiday, while prices are predicted to remain 4-5% lower as compared to last year at HUF 35-40 apiece, Péter Földi, the head of the Poultry Products Council, told Hungarian news agency MTI this morning.

The head added that Hungarian farmers exported 46 million eggs last year, while the country imported 60 million eggs, according to data compiled by the Central Statistics Office (KSH), however the council estimates the number was actually 80 million, Földi said.

Földi noted that with the introduction of a national electronic tracking system for road freight, illegal egg exports are expected to decline. The head added that the egg business is estimated to be worth HUF 60 bln this year. Farmersʼ input costs add up to HUF 18.5 per egg or HUF 22.5 with packaging. They retail for net HUF 24, Földi said. Hungarians consume 215 eggs per capita a year on average, MTI noted.
