GKI-Ersteʼs combined gauge of consumer and business confidence climbed to minus 2.9 points in April from minus 3.6 points in March as both consumer and business expectations improved slightly, GKI announced Sunday.

The business index rose to 4.9 points from 4.2 points while the consumer index improved to minus 25.0 points in April from minus 25.8 points in March. Business expectations improved in trade and minimally rose in the construction sector but remained unchanged in industry and among service companies.

Industrial companiesʼ assessment of outlook for production in the next period improved but expectations for the order stock deteriorated. The construction sector index improved slightly, with the assessment of production in the last three months edging up. Trade companies were more optimistic regarding all examined components including their sales position, inventories and prospective orders.

The service sector index stagnated as the assessment of business in general remained stable, that of turnover in the previous periods improved but expectations for the coming period worsened. Peopleʼs inflationary expectations rose and their unemployment fears also increased.

The assessment of the outlook for the Hungarian economy improved in industry, remained unchanged in trade and slightly deteriorated among construction and service companies and consumers. Householdsʼ assessment of their own financial outlook improved but that of their ability to make savings in the next twelve months rose only minimally.

The seasonally-adjusted GKI-Erste index is supported with European Union funding.
