Competition office launches procedure against UPC

Competition

The Hungarian Competition Office (GVH) today said it has launched a procedure against Luxembourg-based telecommunications and cable TV company UPC Magyarország Telekommunikációs on the suspicion that the service provider abused its monopoly position in District 29, Monor, near the capital Budapest, and its vicinity.

Citing a large number of customer complaints, GVH said UPC, which is reportedly the only service provider in the area in question, provides lower-standard internet service at a higher price in District 29 compared to other areas.

According to the Competition Office, the telecom company has also violated the provisions of the competition law banning the abuse of dominant position, adding that the launch of the procedure does not constitute a declaration that the company has committed the infringement. Under the law, GVH has six months to conduct the procedure, and this period can be extended on two occasions by another six months each time.
