Authority orders restrictions to prevent spread of swamp fever in horses
Hungaryʼs food and animal health authority Nébih has ordered restrictions in ten communities in eight counties around the country to prevent the spread of equine infectious anaemia (EIA), also known by horsemen as swamp fever, the authority said yesterday, responding to a query by Hungarian news agency MTI.
Earlier yesterday, hvg.hu said a number of horses had been destroyed because of the outbreak of an infectious disease and many animals had been placed under quarantine. Nébih told MTI it discovered a case of EIA in a horse from Veszprem County, western Hungary, on March 9.
It then placed a further eight horses under quarantine. Hungary was free of EIA between 1965 and 2010. There were eight cases discovered in 2012, six in 2013 and seven in 2014. In neighboring Romania, the disease is endemic.
