Hungarian apple producers affected by Polish dumping
The extra pain inflicted on Hungarian farmers by Russian sanctions on EU agriculture were noted in the Russian press earlier this month.
According to a report carried by the BBC in Russia, Polish farmers have reacted to the Russian ban on EU products by flooding the market with cheap apples. This market is traditionally dominated by Hungary and by Slovakia and Romania. Increasing competition pushes Hungarian apple producers to drop their prices, putting those who took business loans on their farm in a critical situation, said Miklós Poór, a Hungarian apple producer, to the Russian service of the BBC. Some of us might even go bankrupt, he added.
Hungarian agricultural exports to Russia reached between 166 mln euros and 188 mln euros in the past years.
The Russian ban could cost the Hungarian agricultural sector an estimated 80 mln euros, analysts predict.
