Tesco to lay off fewer employees

In Hungary

The Hungarian unit of U.K. retailer Tesco is planning to lay off 150-170 workers as opposed to the earlier announced 570, head of trade workers' union KDFSZ Csaba Bubenkó told Hungarian business daily Napi Gazdaság today.

Bubenkó said that Tesco is planning to offer jobs to two-thirds of the employees who face redundancy due to the legislation restricting retailers to open on Sundays. He added that some employees will opt for the severance pay because they believe they will be able to find jobs elsewhere in the industry due to vacancies in the retail sector.

The union leader said he expects that the talks with Tesco could be finalized as soon as this week as the retailer has made a very favorable offer.
