Mobile data traffic at Yettel Hungary increased by 89% compared to the previous year's holidays, while New Year's Eve SMS traffic increased by 8%, the company tells the Budapest Business Journal.

The rise of unlimited data plans and home internet solutions contributed to the significant increase in mobile internet traffic on Yettel's network compared to last year, over the festive period between December 24 and January 1.

Yettel customers made the most voice calls on December 24 this Christmas, but the longest calls were made on December 25. The average length of Christmas calls overall increased by 5% compared to last year.

In terms of data traffic, December 26 and January 1 were the two busiest days of the year, with data volumes up 89% year-on-year for the whole festive period, meaning a total of nearly 20 million gigabytes of traffic.

Although Yettel customers were keen to greet each other via text messages on New Year's Eve, SMS traffic was only 8% higher on NYE compared to the same period last year, with a 5% decrease in this form of communication among Yettel customers over the entire festive period.

Yettel Hungary is in the midst of a massive network modernization project worth tens of billions of forints, which has not only significantly increased the capacity of the 4G network with nationwide coverage, but has also paved the way for 5G developments and new mobile-based communication solutions, the company notes.
