The Hungarian unit of U.S.-based luggage manufacturer Samsonite saw a year-on-year 20% growth both in sales and production in Hungary, plant director József Pinczel told Hungarian news agency MTI.

According to the director, sales revenue rose to about HUF 15 bln in 2014 from the previous year’s HUF 12.7 bln, while pre-tax profit reached HUF 1.2 bln last year. The Hungarian unit, located in Székszard in southern Hungary, turned out approximately 800,000 pieces of polypropylene luggage in 2014; figures were 140,000 more than in the previous year.

The Hungarian unit was recently extended with a new production hall through a HUF 2.4 bln investment, which is expected to raise manufacturing capacity by 28% following its scheduled start in March. The investment was funded with a state grant of HUF 717 mln in the Framework of the New Széchenyi Plan.

Samsonite Hungária has invested approximately €17 mln in Szekszárd over the past five years using €5 mln in European Union support.

Samsonite Hungária currently has a headcount of 520.
