MÁV passenger-carriage prototypes to be revamped

Hungarian state-owned railway company MÁV will have to redesign its prototypes for new railway passenger carriages in order to meet EU requirements for disabled access, Hungarian business daily Népszabadság reported today.

During an inspection, EU officials realised that wheelchairs could not pass through the doors of the new Inter City prototype railway carriages, which MÁV-Start built at a cost of HUF 1.4 bln. MÁV-Start is MÁV's passenger unit.

MÁV will have to redesign its carriages. A failure to do so would mean the railway company would have to pay back the HUF 462 mln EU grant it received for building the prototypes.

European Union inspectors also said the carriage stairways were incompatible with EU regulations, notes the Népszabadság
