Lidl Magyarország exports more Hungarian vegetables and fruit

Lidl Magyarország, the Hungarian subsidiary of the German discount chain, exported 22,500 tons of fresh fruit and vegetable worth HUF 3.5 bln in H1 this year, the company informed Hungarian news agency MTI.

Calculated in forint terms, exports rose by 75% year-on-year.

The majority of the exported goods went to Germany, Romania and Slovakia. Green pepper, apricot, fresh mushroom and water melon were bestsellers. Lidl Magyarország exported 11,000 tons of watermelon in H1, 38% more than last year over the same period.

The company expects to export 6,000 tons of fast-frozen vegetables at HUF 2bln this year, more than the 4,200 delivered last year and than the 5,300 tons sold annually on the domestic market. Frozen vegetables come from Hungarian suppliers. 

Lidl Magyarorszag started business in Hungary in 2004. It currently has 159 stores, three logistics centres and a 3,500 staff.

The Hungarian unit had net sales of HUF 227.8 bln last year, up HUF 28 bln. Its net profit was HUF 2.2 bln in 2013, against losses of HUF 7.7bn in 2012.
