Invitel partners in video remote service for hearing impaired
Interest in the video remote interpreting service of the National Association of the Deaf and Hearing Disabled (SINOSZ) is running much higher than expected, according to Invitel, the local service provider that is playing a key role in the project.
The service allows someone with a hearing impairment to communicate with others using an interpreter who is located somewhere else but is connected via a video camera. The video interpreter facilitates communication between the hearing disabled person and their conversation partner. The current project, aimed at Hungarian speakers, is unique in Central Europe.
In developing and implementing the service, Invitel is providing the necessary telecommunications, network and software development, as well as hardware components.
The system has been tested in everyday situations since March, and it is currently used by approximately 780 deaf and hearing-impaired persons.
“Today there are approximately 60,000 deaf and 300,000 hearing-impaired people living in Hungary. To allow as many of them to use the video remote interpreting (VRI) service as possible, we lent out close to 1,250 tablets for testing purposes,” said Róbert Ormódi, Executive Director at SINOSZ.
The info-communications components of the KONTAKT Interpreting Service were developed on Invitel’s nation-wide telecommunication network, in the company’s data center, while its software technology background was put in place by E-Group ICT Software Zrt. This successful development achieved first place in the large corporate category of this year’s InnoMax Award.
