The number of new passenger car registrations in Hungary rose 12.2% year-on-year to 12,895 in March, according to data compiled by the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA), writes novekedes.hu.

Hybrid electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles accounted for 55% of sales. Cars with petrol engines comprised 26% of sales and vehicles with diesel engines 10%. Full EVs accounted for 9% of sales.

In a statement issued after the release of the data, the Ministry of Energy Affairs noted that the number of battery electric cars sold in Hungary had climbed by around 80% in March from the same month a year earlier, the second-fastest rate in Europe after Cyprus.

A total of 2,577 businesses have applied for HUF 12.2 billion in subsidies to purchase 3,147 EVs under a HUF 30 billion government scheme that runs until March 2025, it added.
