IKEA finds workaround to Sunday closures
In an attempt to circumvent the new legislation forcing shops to close on Sundays, Swedish furniture retailer IKEA has found a fair solution. Rather than lay off staff, it will instead extend store hours throughout the remainder of the week, online news portal vg.hu reported yesterday.
IKEA Hungary’s PR representative Eszter Varga-Nagy said that a proposal is currently in place to build a third store in Budapest but many of the details still need to be fine-tuned.
Plans for expansion may depend on the impact of the Sunday closures as well. IKEA Hungary also hopes to launch an online store in the next couple of years, with the U.K. and Ireland currently serving as a testing ground for the project.
