Hungaroring losing popularity against Austrian peer

Conferences

Ticket sales dropped for the Hungarian Formula One track Hungaroring located in Mogyoród. Apparently the Austrian Grand Prix's Red Bull Ring is attracting more people than the Hungarian track and Hungaroring might be faced with difficulties for staying on the F1 schedule.

Ticket sales of Hungaroring, compared to last year’s figures, have dropped by 15% while all the Austrian GP tickets were sold in less than 36 hours. Zsolt Gyulay, the head race organizer of Hungaroring Sport, told Hungarian daily Napi Gazdaság that the situation for the Hungarian track is "not an easy one".

The Austrian track is in a much better condition that the Hungarian, as the government spent €200 mln on the Austrian Red Bull Ring last year and this year, respectively. Hungary cannot afford to spend so much on its track.

Another difficulty is that, in spite of the better condition and the huge amount of money spent on the Austrian ring, the ticket prices are almost identical with the Hungarian ones. Though last year the Hungarian GP has seen a record attendance during the Formula One weekend, expectations for this year’s race are low.

Hungaroring has been generating profit for the last three years and would receive HUF 600 mln from the Hungarian government for improvement.
