Hotel stays edge up 2.9% y.o.y. in May

Tourism

The number of guest nights at commercial accommodations in Hungary rose by 2.9% year-on-year in May, the Central Statistics Office (KSH) announced today.

The rise indicates a slowing trend as compared to the double digit increases of January, February and April.

The number of Hungarians travelling in Hungary grew faster in May: Foreigner-spent guest nights fell by 4.1% between May 2013 and May 2014, while Hungarian-spent guest nights increased by 13.8% in that period.

Most of the foreigners arriving to Hungary come from Germany, though May's year-on-year figures saw a 10.3% decrease in German visitors. Russian visitors are the second-largest group, and their guest nights in Hungary dropped by 13.2% in that period. The third largerst group of foreign visitors, Austrians, spent 5.8% fewer nights in Hungary this year as opposed to May 2013.

Despite the slowing trends, total revenue from commercial accommodations rose by 8% year-on-year in May. The gross average room rate at hotels was HUF 17,128 per night in May, and the occupancy rate at hotels that month was 55.5%.
