Elevators in Hungary to meet stricter regulations by 2020
A decree amended by the Hungarian government last year could require thousands of elevators to be either replaced or refurbished by 2020, Hungarian daily Népszabadság reported today.
According to the head of the Hungarian Elevator Association, elevators that were not built or have not been renovated in the past 20 years, will be scrutinized for compliance with stricter safety regulations by 2020. Kornél Apatini told the paper that most of the aforementioned elevators are not expected to reach the threshold of safety regulations.
Approximately 30% of the 37,000 elevators in Hungary were installed before 1990. According to Apatini’s estimates, the cost of installing a new elevator is roughly HUF 5-10 mln, while the cost of renovation is about 20%-25% of that amount.
