Debrecen airport operator, GYSEV plan freight-trains to major ports
Debrecen airport operator Xanga Group and Austrian-Hungarian railways GYSEV Cargo announced they will operate scheduled freight container trains from Debrecen (eastern Hungary) through terminals in Törökbálint, near Budapest and through Vienna to major European ports from January.
The service will be launched under an agreement on strategic cooperation signed by Xanga CEO István Herdon and GYSEV Cargo CEO János Skala in Debrecen last Friday. Debrecen is the country's only international airport with a direct rail connection, and the service will connect it with European ports such as Koper, Rijeka, Hamburg, Bremerhaven and Rotterdam, national development ministry state secretary responsible for transport policy Lászlo Tasó, present at the signing, said.
State capital also took part in the recent developments, Taso noted, pointing out that the state's foundation Széchenyi Tőkealap recently acquired 38% of SAIGO Logistics, operating the Debrecen container terminal. SAIGO is majority-owned by Xanga. György Firbas of SAIGO said that GYSEV will operate the service through the Vienna container terminal operated by Wiencont and the Törökbálint one operated by IntegRail.
Containers will be provided by the French group Toaux and logistics machinery by Zeiss Forkliftcenter of Austria. The scheduled trains will serve not only East Hungary but also the Western part of Romania to Cluj Napoca, Firbas said. The airport's owner, the local council, spent about HUF 4 bln-4.5 bln on developments at the airport earlier, and the operator Xanga group has spent a further HUF 4 bln, Debrecen mayor Lászlo Papp said.
