Hungary’s National Development Ministry is working on a draft of regulations that would ban taxis older than ten years from all Hungarian cities as of 2018, Hungarian economic daily Napi Gazdaság reported today.

The regulations are expected to be submitted to the Hungarian government by the end of February at the earliest, the paper said. In accordance with current regulations, taxi drivers in the capital must comply with the vehicle age threshold by the middle of this year.

According to estimates made by National Taxi Association head Zoltán Metál, approximately half of the 9,500 taxis in Hungary operate in the capital, Budapest. He put the average age of taxis outside of the capital at 8-12 years.
