Report: Press freedom declines in Hungary

History

Hungary was ranked 65th out of 180 countries with a score of 27.44 on the 2015 World Press Freedom Index, which is compiled annually by the Reporters Without Borders to promote and defend the freedom to inform and be informed all over the world.

Hungary’s best rank on the index was in 2006, when the country was 10th on a list of 161 investigated countries. Ever since, Hungarian free speech has been deteriorating according to the index. In 2010, when the second Orbán government was formed, Hungary was 23rd on a list of 173 countries.

“Democracy has been in retreat in Hungary ever since Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz party came to power in 2010, with the result that the country has fallen 42 places in the index in the past four years” the report says.

“Fidesz continues to harass news media that are not under its control … in June, [the Hungarian] parliament adopted a law that reinforces the government’s repressive arsenal by taxing media income from advertising. It was clearly designed to silence RTL Klub, a TV station that has repeatedly criticized the government,” the report added.
