Report: Budapest utility prices among lowest in Europe

Energy Trade

Retail gas and electricity prices in Hungary are now among the lowest in Europe, after a round of government-mandated price cuts, business daily Napi Gazdaság reported today. At €0.134 per kilowatt hour (kWh), the average retail price for electricity in Budapest is more expensive only than the price in Belgrade (€0.0624), Zagreb (€0.129) and Bucharest (€0.1309), the ‘paper reported, citing data from E-Control Austria, VaasaETT and the Hungarian Energy Regulatory Office (MEKH).

The Hungarian mark is well below the €0.1826 average shown in a survey of 23 capital cities around Europe.

The average price of retail gas in Budapest, at €0.0371 per kWh, is the second-cheapest in Europe after Bucharest.

Hungary’s government mandated 20% cuts in household gas and electricity prices in 2013.
Although gas and electricity are cheaper now, Hungarians still spend more of their income – about 6% – on these bills than in Vienna or Berlin, where the ratio is a little more than 2%, according to the ‘paper.
