Police expecting demonstrations in Budapest

Social

A number of bridges in Budapest and vicinity are being secured by local police, as they are expecting impromptu demonstrations against the new vignette-based road toll system introduced in January, Hungarian online daily origo.hu reported. Official permission for the demonstration was denied, but there have been rumors of an unofficial protest.

Zoltán Büki, the former MP of Együtt-PM, was in the process of organizing a country-wide road blockade originally scheduled for yesterday, against the road toll system. The police, however, rejected Büki’s official report regarding the demonstration on numerous occasions, and Büki decided to cancel the event as a result.

Nonetheless, the Hungarian police heard that some individuals were still planning on holding demonstrations in the most-frequented locations around Budapest; as such the police have chosen to secure these locations.
