An online food price comparison platform launched by the Competition Office and the Ministry of Economic Development on July 1 got around 200,000 visitors in its first two days of operation, the ministry said in a release on its website.

The Hungarian language platform, at arfigyelo.gvh.hu, contains price information on products in 62 categories at big supermarket chains.

The platform is among a number of measures the government has rolled out to bring down inflation.

Mandatory discounts supermarkets must offer regularly on a number of food products will be raised from 10% to 15% from August 1, the ministry noted.

Mandatory discounts will also apply to price-capped products, such as milk, flour and sugar, after price caps are phased out on August 1. Retailers' cost will be the base for the sale prices of the products.
