Akeem Adams, Trinidad & Tobago native, Ferencváros footballer, dies
Ferencváros FC football player Akeem Adams of Trinidad & Tobago passed away on Monday in a Hungarian hospital due to complications after a heart attack suffered in late September. He was 22 years old.
A memorial was held at the Ferencváros facility for Adams yesterday (video embedded directly below) at which club officials and a few dozen others turned out.
An obituary running on the club’s official website stated that the “Fradi crowd, well-known for its criticism, took Akeem quickly in” when he joined the club in early September. In commending Adams’s play in one of his few matches, a 2-1 victory over Győr, the ‘site notes that “he became one of [the fans’] favorite players. He earned both supporters’ and professionals’ credit for his tough but clear play. He was solid, serene and played in the spirit of fair play.
“Akeem Adams became an appreciated member of Ferencvárosi FTC, who in the future can be looked upon as a role-model for his serenity, humility and steadfast play.”
Akeem’s uncle Ivan Dick described the reaction to the news in the family’s hometown of Point Fortin to local news outlet Newsday with “Well, everybody is in shock. A lot of sorrow and sadness. He was one of our own, a bright son, one of our young and positive prospects in the community and he suddenly departed so the entire village is in mourning. It is indeed a sad day for football, Point Fortin, Trinidad and Tobago and his family as a whole.”
Adams’ professional career included stints with the Trinidad & Tobago national team, two clubs in the island nation’s top league and a trial run with Major League Soccer’s Seattle Sounders.
Due to the holiday season, no arrangements have been made as of today for Adams’s mother and brother, who had been staying in Hungary during his hospitalization, nor the body itself, to return to Trinidad & Tobago.
