Biden in Ukraine today; Hungary, Slovakia natural gas supply to be discussed
US Vice President Joe Biden is slated to meet with Ukrainian leaders – among them Prime Minister Arseny Yatseniuk and acting president Oleksander Turchinov – today to discuss the ongoing situation with Russia and to announce a few details of an energy/economic aid package for the beleaguered country.
Senior administration officials informed US media that a group has been in Ukraine in preparation for Biden’s arrival to work out the securing of natural gas flow from Hungary and Slovakia should Russia cut off its supply to Ukraine.
Russian President Vladimir Putin last week gave Ukraine a one-month deadline to repay national debt, including that run up in energy purchases. Earlier this month, Foreign Minister János Martonyi stated that Hungary stands ready to transport gas into Ukraine, should Russian supplies be cut off, and that the technical means for doing so are at its disposal.
