Hungarian environment minister asks for information on Romanian gold mine
Friday 15:05, February 19th, 2010
Hungarian Environment Minister Imre Szabó has asked his Romanian counterpart for urgent information on the planned reopening of a controversial gold mine in northwest Romania, the ministry told MTI.

The ministry has learnt from press reports that a Russian-owned company has submitted an application to Romanian environmental authorities for a permit to reopen the gold mine in Baia Mare, the statement said.

In 2000 a cyanide spill from the mine nearly wiped out wildlife in the river Tisza which flows into Hungary.

Romanian Environment Minister László Borbély told the Transylvanian daily Krónika that they had not received any application for reopening the gold mine as yet. (MTI – Econews)
