Hungarian President Katalin Novák paid an official visit to Ukraine yesterday, according to state news agency MTI.

On her first public stop on the trip, Novák attended an ecumenical service marking Saint Stephen's Day at a Catholic church in Berehove, in the west of the country, home to a large number of ethnic Hungarians. Together with believers there, she prayed for peace.

In an address marking the occasion, Novák said it was good to celebrate with the Transcarpathian Hungarians despite all difficulties.

At talks in Kyiv, Novák said she would bring a message that those who had been attacked, who were in need, could count on the assistance of Hungary.

"We also expect Hungarians here in Transcarpathia to be allowed to live their lives in a manner worthy of them and of Europe," she added.
