Left-wing parties converge on Baja
The political leaders of the left wing, MSzP chairman Attila Mesterházy and Together 2014 (E14-PM) chairman Gordon Bajnai -- though not Democratic Coalition (DK) chairman Ferenc Gyurcsány -- will personally campaign in the repeated local by-election in Baja on behalf of MSzP/E14-PM/DK coalition candidate Melinda Teket.
A district in Baja will see a repeat of local by-elections in its fifth district constituency after a Kecskemét court handed down a ruling regarding the disputed results of the vote.
A complaint was filed that the governing Fidesz party, which saw its candidate win rigged the election by transporting busloads of Roma citizens to vote, eventually allegedly leading to the victory of Fidesz candidate Csaba Kovács over Teket and other candidates.
The court found the events mean a violation of campaign silence and ordered the repeat, scheduled for October 13.
Even prior to the vote count, the Baja campaign was characterized as relying on smear tactics, with Bajnai stating last week that “Fidesz has introduced the politics of crudeness and extremism to the level of public affairs.”
