Hungarian Feed Companies Look to Ukraine for Maize Amid Shortage

Crops

Hungarian feed and manufacturing companies are buying maize from Ukraine amid a local shortage caused by the summer drought, state secretary Zsolt Feldman noted at a conference, the Agriculture Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.

With 40% of the harvest completed, Hungary's maize crop is expected to be around 3 million tonnes this year, well under the 6 mln-8 mln tonnes in earlier years, Feldman said at the Hungrail railway conference.

He noted that the rail cargo volume of grain brought from Ukraine to Hungary has averaged 120,000 tonnes in recent months.

That volume, which includes grain bound for other countries as well as imports for Hungary, reached 179,000 tonnes in September, he added.
