A total of 15 cases of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus have been detected by Hungary's National Public Health Centre (NKK), state news wire MTI reports, citing an update by the government's official pandemic website koronavirus.gov.hu.

The variant, which is spreading rapidly in a number of European countries, is more contagious than other COVID variants, but there have been conflicting reports on the severity of illness the variant causes given the lack of clinical experience, the website said.

The first Omicron cases in Hungary were detected about a week earlier.
