The University of Debrecen (225 km east of Budapest) wound up a project to set up a pilot research laboratory for the development and production of viral and bacterial agents last week, according to hirado.hu.

The investment was supported by more than HUF 5 billion in European Union and state grant money.

University chancellor Zoltán Bács said the lab would contribute to cooperation between higher education and the business sector.

Ildikó Bácskay Kovács, who heads the school's pharmaceutical technology department, said the lab, with two high biosafety level working environments, could bring local vaccine development "to the next level."
